Sailing with Capt Ron

Yesterday, Bev and I were invited for a day sail aboard "Blitzen" a beautiful 45 foot Morgan owned by our neighbor at the marina, Capt Ron. Julie and Tim, their friend Wink and two of our neighbors, both named Keith, rounded out the crew.
It was a great day, lots of sun, a few clouds, East wind around 15 or so. The east wind meant that the wind was strong enough to sail, but didn't have enough "fetch" to kick up any serious waves. The result was perfect sailing conditions.
At one point we came up behind another boat from our marina, the "Midnight Heat." With Mike at the helm, "Blitzen" easily outpaced "Midnight Heat." Here are a few pics of a really great sailing day.
I know, it's a rough life, but someone's got to live it.

It flies!

Today Bev and I test flew our new sail that we have been making. There's a little bit of work left to do, but most of the hard stuff is done.
The test flight of the sail is important so that we mount the sheet blocks in the right place to make the sail set with a good, efficient airfoil.
Looks pretty good to me.

Chandra, sailmaking and a movie!

Another busy week. It's really amazing how much work is involved with this "retirement" stuff.
We're all (Chandra, Bev and I) appearing as extras in the upcoming documentary "Ghosts of Ybor City." It's about the life of Charlie Wall, a local hood who was famous for running a crooked "bolita" game. It's a sort of numbers scam. We spent the whole day last Sunday on the set. It took all day to film two brief scenes. It's fascinating to watch them set the lights, position the camera, etc. I hadn't realized before that even the camera has to be rehearsed. The camera moves with the action and has to be coordinated, so I guess it makes sense.
After the day's shoot, Chandra came to the boat to spend a few days. Bev had to work, so Chandra and I got to hang out together. We went for dingy rides, and even took a trip to downtown St. Pete, to the Pier, to the history museum, etc. She's such a ham. Take a look at these pics.
Bev and I have also been working on making a new sail for the boat. It's called a "reacher" and we will use it to add extra sail area when the wind is light. It will save using the engine. I bought the kit from a company called SailRite. They had the exact pattern in their database, taken directly from Bolger's original design so it should work beautifully. Their kits are quite simple to make since they cut all the panels, label everything and even mark the seam allowances. The new sail is 120 sqare feet, made of green ripstop nylon. It will fly on a whisker pole out in front of the main and act like a jib when the wind is too light to get good speed without it. Previously, we've had to resort to using the engine to get reasonable speed when the wind is light, but now we will have another option.

Chandra, Red Sox, a bon voyage party

So what have we been up to?
Well, Sunday, Bev and I went to Tropicana Field to watch the Tampa Bay Devil Rays play the Boston Red Sox. The Sox lost 5-2. The game was scoreless through 6 innings. Then the Rays got 5 runs on 3 homers in the 7th. The Sox came back with 2 back to back homers. Both teams brought out new pitchers in the 8th and shut down the hitters.
Neither of us had been to a ML game in years. It felt good to be in the crowd eating a $5 hotdog.
After the game we had a beer at the famous sports pub "Ferg's."
Last Thursday we had a bon voyage party for our friends Patrick and Lynn and "Mr. Christian" the cat. They have purchased a new boat and will be leaving the marina. We sent out fliers to the other boaters in the marina so we got pretty good attendance. Good food, good drink, good friends - it doesn't get any better.
Last week we had another visit from Chandra. She stay with us a few days. She and I took the dingy out with the sail a couple of times. Chandra saw a manatee swim in front of us. She also took a few trips around the marina in the dingy by herself. She now claims the title "Captain of the Dingy." She's quite the little monkey, climbing all over the boat, up onto the boom, etc.
One day we all took a bus down to St. Pete Beach. We saw the "Transformers" movie and then went to the beach. Chandra and I flew a kite (when I could get the little fish out of the water!)

Visitors

What a busy week!
Friday afternoon we took some new friends, Mitchell and Laurie, out for a sail. It was his first time sailing and he expressed surprise at the slow speed. (Hey, he was used to power boats, so 4 knots seems slow to him.) Sorry Laurie, for some reason we didn't get you in any of the pictures.
Friday evening we went to the theater in Gulfport to see the Summer One-Acts. These were 8 short plays written, produced, directed and acted by local people. The stage manager, David, took us back stage to see some of our old friends from Scapino.
The plays were all very well done. Some were funny, others poignant.
Bev and I tried out for some "extra" roles in a documentary being filmed in Ybor City next month. It is about Charlie Wall, a gangster from the 20's and 30's. He was known as the "King of Bolita," a type of "power-ball" that was popular, but constantly rigged.
Yesterday, we had a visit from Mike and Phyllis. They are contemplating building a boat to go cruising and the AS-29 is on their list of possibilities. We took them on the tour of the boat and answered their questions about the boat and the cruising life. They took us down to the Pier for lunch at The Columbian. It was a real treat, the food was terrific, the company great and the view fabulous.
This morning I got a call from my ex, Judi, who told me that she is bringing Chandra over to stay for a few days. This will give me some time to get to know my granddaughter a little better and maybe teach her a little bit on the guitar.

Chandra goes sailing!

Yesterday my Granddaughter Chandra visited us and we all went for a sail. Her Uncle Lee drove her to the marina and stayed with us the whole day.
Chandra got to see dolphins and actually managed to get a few pics. (Instead of the "hole in the water where the dolphin used to be" like Bev and I have been getting.)
Chandra even took a turn at the tiller.
After our sail we went to Philthy Phils for some late lunch, and then a trip to the beach. By the time the sun went down, Bev and I were worn out. (Chandra napped in the car and so was rarin' to go.)

Bev's "crew"

Admiral Bev has asked me to post some pics of her friends and family back in MA. Everybody needs their 15 minutes as per Andy Warhol.

Graduation, George Washington and Choppers

No, not THOSE choppers, bikes as in Orange County Choppers. On our way back from Plymouth, Bev and I stopped off in Orange County NY so I could visit with my Aunt Kay. While in the area we stopped to see the folks I used to work with at Orange Regional Medical Center. Hi Margie, Ada, Tyler, Rob, Ed, Elaine, Sandy and everyone else.
The visit to Orange County included a stop at Orange County Chopper the home of Paul Sr., Paul Jr. and Mikey of TV fame. We browsed the shop and saw some of the famous bikes included the FDNY bike, complete with fire hydrant.
We also went to the nation's very first "National Historic Site," Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh. Of course it was Tuesday, so the place was closed! We knocked on the door and the site manager, Donald Fraser came out and told us that they were giving a private tour to a VIP but that we were welcome to join them.
The VIP turned out to be Mrs. Hamilton Fish IV, widow of a famous Congressman.
The museum curator, Mel Johnson, took us all on a wonderful narrated tour of the grounds and the house. The old saw "Washington Slept Here" in this case has been thoroughly documented, right down to the actual room he used as his bedroom.
Washington spent more time at this house than at any other posting during the entire Revolution. He stayed here from the surrender of Cornwalis at Yorktown through the signing of the Treaty of Paris. It was necessary for him to keep the army together during this period as the British kept an army posted in New York City until after the final peace treaty was signed.
The Washington's Headquarters Site was the very first place to be designated as an historic site anywhere in the world! It served as the example for the preservation of Mount Vernon, Washinton's home in Virginia, and all other historic sites.
Here also are a few pics of Matt's graduation. The ceremony was OK as these things go, too long and full of speeches that no one listens to, especially the keynote speech made by John Kerry.
Bev was of course, very proud of Matt, the first of her kids to graduate college. His degree is in economics.
Bev wanted me to be sure and mention that she saved a turtle. While on the beach at Plymouth we spotted a large fresh-water turtle in the surf. He was struggling to get up the beach, so Bev called the environmental conservation folks and they came and took the turtle to the aquarium for a checkup. It was severely dehydrated from exposure to the salt water. They cared for it and then released it back to its normal habitat. How it got into the Bay was a mystery.
